Division C: OF Breyer or Other Plastic Traditional Division: As expected this was the largest number of entries in a halter division. I would grab the sorted bundle for a class and make a quick pass through all the photos in that class. I cut from the first pass all photos that are too dark, too blurry, legs and ears cut off, and any other infringement on what I consider a suitable photo entry. I then follow my personal judging of model horses by choosing from the second pass through all the horse's that make that are suitable for my class based on proper breed conformation, color assignment & gender suitability. Next I used a 10% good photo quality point system. I prefer eye detail, facial expression, no shadows on the horse, under or behind the horse. I will use a photo with shadows in it when the subject is outstanding the rest of the field lesser to it in my percentage system. Backgrounds and fence lines need to be within the proper scale to the horse. Having said that I do not DQ but rather assign a percentage point to my various section's of judging and use a plus and minus scale system. Horse's that blend into the background and not pop out away from the background are also given a minus point. I only put up 4 Honorable Mentions this year but would have chosen to put up many more except I have other judging's committments for other club's Championship Shows this year and it takes a lot of time to scan those photos. There were many other images that certainly deserved merit in this division. As in the past, I did DQ a few entries in the whole show due to illegal registation of color to the breed assigned. I also moved quite a few pattern colors to the correct classes, especially in pinto patterns. The 2007 Grand Horse for this division is on the same mold as last year's horse. But time he is a beautiful bay overo paint. The eyes are liquid and alive in the photo. The mapping to the mapping to the pattern is so well done it and caught on film it looks like a custom paint job. The Reserve was a very close placement to the Grand. It took a magnifying glass and a 100 watts light bulb to view both photos to make my final pin. The eye on this is a perfect wall eye. There were several other entries submitted of this same model but none had the detail it them as this one both in the eye and the pattern on a silver slate grulla overo with tiger stripes on the front legs. Again the photo caught a really good attempt at mapping for an original finish. My Honorable Mentions: Halle is a dark seal bay on the NSH mold with an incredible upper eye white and delicious seal shading. Amerigo is a standing Breyer ASB clock horse done is dark grey and was a SR for Pennys in 2005. The shading and the blaze on the face softens and adds a slight curve dish to the box length to the face of this mold making it more defined. Northern Scotch Pine is on the Smart Chic Olena mold. While not a mold suitable for performance it is a very attractive mold. This one has wonderful roan shading and the fit of the silver show halter adds to the entry. Grassland Dino B is the only Adios mold as the SR Brandywine that had the color correctly labeled. He was also entered as a part QH and part New Forest which is certainly a good breed assignment. There are still a lot of modelers out there that call this mold a QH or a foundation QH or an aged QH. Not in my book. The mold is too heavy in shoulders and neck and too heavy in bone. To be a foundation QH he would have to display the bulldog look which is shorter front legs and topline on a rake downhill. It's true some aged stallions do tend to get heavy crested but this mold is heavy and thick from the shoulder upward. He is basewide at the neck. The mold is more suited for anything with bone like a Warmblood cross with draft. Try it and you will see the more informed and educated model horse judges will use your Adios mold higher in placements than if you label it a stock horse breed. On the subject of the Brandywine model. There were several entered in this show. Granted the photos were all slightly different in shading with the issue of the model first and the film and camera exposure next. But the color assigments were interesting, smutty chestnut, smutty dun, silver bay, silver dapple, dunalino and dark red chestnut with flaxen mane and tail. The correct color is a silver bay. But old timers I knew as a kid called them a Concho Dun. Referring to the Mexican Concho which tarnishes to an odd red rust color with silver coming through it due to the lower quality of silver used to make a Concho. Thank you all for sharing your collections with me. I truly enjoyed judging this division.

Division D: CM Classic or Traditional: Wow what a deep quality custom division. Add to that the joy of seeing new customs and vintage customs. This year's Grand is a Breyer Stud Spider custom with the incredible single haired roan effect done by the well known and very talented Diane Capwell. The eye detail is so real I half expected him to whinny at any moment. He is done as a bay roan with large cookie kisses on his muzzle. Reserve Champion is a PS Stone Arabian done to shaded honey colored bay by all star artist Cary Nelson. The entry has a very well done Arabian arena show style headstall, great hairing techic and limpede brown eyes. The 2007 Honorable Mentions are outstanding this year. Ahknuit is a Knabstrup stallion with a red bay leopard pattern painted by Diane Capwell. Royalty Precedence is a Custom PS QH in a very well done dappled grey. Waking Dreams is a bay roan Appaloosa mare custom Lady Phase by Judy Renee Pope. The layering of roaning in shaded strokes can be viewed with a magnifying glass and reveals her incredible talent. Zafra has made the HM List twice in row. She is a custom Zebra by Kim Jacobs from the Breyer App Perf Horse. I said it last year and I'm sticking to my story. That's the most realistic striping I've ever seen on a Zebra model in either live shows or in a photo shows. Smokin' Hot Gossamer is a Palomino QH foal done on the Black Horse Ranch Foal mold by Lynn Norbury. The hazel colored eye and the wonderful mane hairing job caught my eye. Many a foal I've lead into the ring with a "curl forward mane" after wearing a mane tamer for a couple hours before a foal futurity. It made me smile. LBR Sunburnt Sierra is a Custom PSISH by Julia Garstka with amazing detail to a silver dappled color. This horse looks so real you swear you think it is breathing. AC's Love & Friendship is a unbelievable piece of custom work done by Lisa Rivera of a Breyer Belgian remake into a standing Percheron. This one I took the "glass" to and studied the leg repostioning. Wow is all you can say!
